What is Cone Crusher

A cone crusher is a machine that crushes rocks into smaller pieces using a cone-shaped mantle that rotates within a bowl-shaped frame. The mantle applies a compression force on the rocks, which are then discharged from the bottom of the cone. Cone crushers are commonly used in the mining, construction, and aggregate industries for size reduction and shape refinement of rocks.

Benefits of Cone Crusher

Production Efficiency
Cone crushers are built to serve one task exceptionally well, and they're designed with efficiency in mind. These machines can easily be adjusted to increase productivity, allowing businesses to get more done in less time.

High Crushing Ratio
Cone crushers also have a high crushing ratio, and they're able to quickly process raw material to a more uniformly fine size than first stage crushers. As the mantle rotates at high speed, it quickly transforms raw material into smaller particles, which also helps to reduce operational costs.

Easy to Maintain
While a cone crusher may look intimidating, most basic maintenance is quite easy to perform. There aren't many moving parts to worry about, and they rarely break down, provided you stay on top of essential regular maintenance of the machine.

Reliable
Cone crushers tend to last for many years provided you use the machine properly and stay on top of the essential maintenance that's required. Manufacturers spend a great deal of time developing creative ways to protect their equipment from wear, which translates to a longer lifespan for the machine.

Cost-Efficient
Since cone crushers serve one function, it's easy for manufacturers to focus on making them more efficient and cost-effective to run. Today's advanced cone crushers are computer-controlled and carefully optimized to generate the most force while expending the least energy. While the initial cost of a cone crusher is quite high, their long lifespan allows businesses to absorb that cost over time, which helps make them more cost-efficient. Plus, since there are so few parts required to keep a cone crusher running, there are fewer parts that can break down or wear out over time.

Types of Cone Crusher
Spring cone crusher

This type of cone crusher uses springs to provide pressure on the feed material and discharge it through the discharge opening. The springs help to absorb shock and reduce wear and tear on the crusher components.

Hydraulic cone crusher

This type of cone crusher uses hydraulic systems to adjust the crusher's settings, including the crusher's discharge opening size and the cavity's depth. The hydraulic system can also protect the crusher from damage in case of overload or irregular operation.

Compound cone crusher

This type of cone crusher combines the advantages of both the spring cone crusher and the hydraulic cone crusher. It uses a combination of springs and hydraulic cylinders to achieve a more efficient crushing process.

Symons cone crusher

This is a type of cone crusher that was originally designed by the Symons brothers in the 1920s, and it is still used today. It features a fixed bowl liner and a rotating mantle, and it can crush rock or other materials by squeezing them between the mantle and bowl liner.

Gyratory cone crusher

This type of cone crusher has a conical head and a concave surface that is covered by a manganese steel lining. The material is crushed by the gyrating motion of the head, which causes the rock to be crushed against the concave surface. Gyratory cone crushers are typically used for large-scale mining and quarrying operations.

05/

Industrial Applications
Cone crushers find application in various industrial sectors, such as cement manufacturing, ceramics production, and chemical processing. They can crush materials for use in the production of cement, ceramic tiles, and other industrial products.

06/

Secondary and Tertiary Crushing
Cone crushers are often used for secondary and tertiary crushing tasks in combination with other crushing equipment. They can be employed after primary crushers like jaw crushers to further reduce the size of the material.

Components of Cone Crusher

Top Shell & Spider Cap Assembly
The feed is fed by conveyors to a feed bin above the vertically mounted cone crusher. Feed enters the crusher via an opening in the upper shell. Depending upon the cone crusher design, a distribution plate may be used to distribute the feed evenly as it enters the crusher. A spider cap (if fitted) houses the upper bearing of the main shaft; the shaft is lubricated with grease or oil depending upon the design.

Main Shaft
The main shaft is normally manufactured from high grade forged steel (annealed for stress relief). The upper part of the shaft is supported by a self-aligning bearing in the spider cap (if fitted). The self-aligning bearing is designed to cater for the movement generated by the oscillating shaft; This oscillating movement is caused by the lower eccentric drive arrangement. The journal of the spider bearing is shrunk onto the top of the main shaft.

Step Bearing
The bottom of the main shaft is supported by a three-piece step bearing arrangement that oscillates with the main shaft. The step bearing supports the weight of the shaft.

Mantle & Concaves
The mantle is installed over the head/cone, which is mounted onto main shaft. The mantle forms part of the replaceable wear surfaces and it oscillates with the moving shaft (moving wear surface). Mantles are typically manufactured from manganese steel alloy.

Eccentric Drive & Bushing
Eccentric motion is achieved by the lower eccentric bushing and drive arrangement located at the bottom of the main shaft. This arrangement is similar in design and principal to that used by gyratory crushers. The eccentric bushing is manufactured from high carbon steel fitted with a bronze inner wear sleeve. It is possible to adjust the eccentric throw by installing different sized sleeves. The‘throw'defines the range of movement of the shaft and consequently the distance between the mantle and bowl liner at any given point, this is particularly relevant at the choke point (the place where the mantle's diameter is largest and where the mantle comes physically closest to the stationary wear surfaces).

Pinion Gear & Countershaft Assembly
An alloy steel pinion gear is mounted onto a pinion drive shaft. The pinion drive shaft is supported by pinion shaft bearings fed from a common lubrication system. An external motor pulley arrangement provides motive power to the pinion shaft, which in turn rotates the main shaft via this pinion and crown gear arrangement.

How to Choose Cone Crusher

Type of rock

Different types of rocks have different hardness and abrasiveness levels. For instance, a hard and abrasive rock will require a more robust and durable cone crusher than a softer rock.

Capacity

The amount of rock you need to crush will determine the size of the cone crusher you need. Larger cone crushers have higher capacity and can handle more material at once.

Size of the feed material

The size of the rocks you will be crushing should be considered when selecting a cone crusher. The cone crusher's capacity to handle feed material will depend on the maximum feed size.

Crushing application

Cone crushers are designed for different types of crushing applications. For example, some are better suited for secondary crushing, while others are designed for tertiary crushing.

Maintenance and operating costs

The cost of maintenance and operating a cone crusher should also be taken into consideration. Some models require more maintenance than others, and this will impact your operating costs.

Features

Different cone crushers come with different features, such as automation, hydraulic adjustment, and anti-spin technology. You should consider which features are essential to your application and choose a cone crusher accordingly.

Working Principle of Cone Crushers

Feeding Stage

Stones are fed into the cone crusher. The feeding process ensures that the stones are delivered to the crusher in a regular and controlled manner. In this stage, large stones are prepared to be transformed into smaller pieces.

Crushing Stage

The eccentric shaft in the cone crusher causes the crusher head to rotate. This rotational movement enables the stones to be crushed. Stones trapped in the gap between the conical head and the body are crushed and broken. The stones are fragmented through pressure and friction between the crusher head and the conical body.

Screening Stage

The stones that have undergone the crushing process pass through holes at the bottom of the cone crusher. Depending on the sizes of these holes, stones of the desired size pass through the screening process, while unwanted larger pieces get caught in the screening. This step is crucial to obtain stones that meet specified standards.

How to Maintain Cone Crusher

Constant Lubrication
Lubrication is one of the most important practices a cone crusher needs to avoid breakdowns because of the constant crushing actions the machine performs and the friction it creates. Good lubrication will minimize wear and tear, reduce component or equipment damage, and increase performance levels. You should lubricate a cone crusher every 500 hours to keep the machine running smoothly throughout its life span. Lubricants like greases must be lithium or calcium soap-based with oil viscosity and pressure additives.

Choke Feeding
Properly choke feeding the cone crusher with the right amount of material during the process will maintain high consistency levels and ensure quality products. Proper maintenance will avoid creating an unbalance in the choker caused by irregular vibrations from a poor distribution process.Keeping a constant flow of material will prevent the cone from recirculating old pieces that could damage the interior screens and circuits.

Know Your Crusher's Limits
Heavy-duty machines have high capacities and can perform for long hours without stopping, so you need the best maintenance practices. Learning your crusher's limits comes from experience and knowing what an effective process looks and sounds like. When your crusher performs correctly, your Raymond mill will deliver better results after the crushing process. Your machines must work as one, especially when each has a unique process that complements the others. Finding the correct Raymond mill parts will keep products consistent, complete the process with the crusher, and maintain an efficient workflow.

Monitor Consistency
With time, you will know what a functional machine with high-quality results sounds like in terms of vibration, beeping, and bouncing noises. A best practice for a cone crusher requires daily attention to detect a problem before it escalates.

FAQ

Q: How do you maintain an impact crusher?

A: Check Impact Crusher.Check for wear and damage and replace worn parts if needed. If applicable, change hammers when you process large amounts of another material. Before closing, clean the edges of the crusher housing so that metal hits metal upon closing the impact crusher box.

Q: How do you increase the efficiency of a jaw crusher?

A: Focus on the feed.Typically, the maximum fed size is roughly 80% of the feed opening depth. Removing the fines from the feed before it's passed to the crusher avoids accelerated wear of the jaw dies and increases the crusher's performance.

Q: What are the disadvantages of cone crushers?

A: Reduced efficiency: Used cone crushers may not be as efficient as newer models, which can impact their overall performance and output. Wear and tear: Cone crushers are subject to a lot of wear and tear, especially in high-volume crushing environments, which can lead to reduced lifespan and higher maintenance costs.

Q: What is the difference between cone crusher and impact crusher?

A: The main difference between an impact crusher and a cone crusher is that an impact crusher uses impact force to crush material, while a cone crusher uses pressure to crush material. Impact crushers typically use high-speed rotating hammers to crush material, while cone crushers use a spinning conical head.

Q: What is the maintenance of cone crushers?

A: Cone Crusher Maintenance. For a new crusher, change the lubrication oil after 100 hours of operation. The second oil change should be completed after 300 hours. Thereafter, change the oil once every 500 hours. Change the lubrication oil immediately upon discovering extensive contamination and sludge.

Q: How do you adjust the gap on a cone crusher?

A: The size of the crushing gap can be adjusted by vertically moving the bowl with respect to the crushing head. As the bowl vertically moves with respect to the adjustment ring and main frame, the bowl and bowl liner move vertically with respect to the mantle.

Q: What is the crushing ratio of a cone crusher?

A: A Cone Crusher is a compression type of machine that reduces material by squeezing or compressing the feed material between a moving piece of steel and a stationary piece of steel. Jump To: Cone Crushers deliver a 4:1 to 6:1 reduction ratio.

Q: What is the theory of cone crusher?

A: As the feed moves towards the drive end of the cone crusher, its size decreases (due to the crushing action), and ever smaller pieces move towards the drive end of the crusher. After passing through the crusher, the product -now at a much-reduced size- is discharged through an opening in the bottom shell.

Q: What is the nip angle of cone crusher?

A: The operation is similar to the standard cone crushers, except that the size reduction is caused more by attrition than by impact. The reduction ratio is around 8:1 and as the product size is relatively small the feed size is limited to less than 50 mm with a nip angle between 25° and 30°..

Q: What is the difference between standard and short head cone crusher?

A: The short-head cone crusher with a relatively long parallel belt produces finer materials. Generally, this type of cone crusher is used after medium crushing; while the standard cone crusher has a coarser grain size and yields High, the crushed materials can be used as medium crushing.

Q: How to set a cone crusher?

A: To adjust a cone-type crusher, you need to adjust the size of the opening at the discharge end of the crusher. This can be done by adjusting the setting on the cone, adjusting the tension on the springs and/or tightening or loosening the threaded portion of the bowl assembly.

Q: What is the rotation of a cone crusher?

A: The eccentric shaft in the cone crusher causes the crusher head to rotate. This rotational movement enables the stones to be crushed. Stones trapped in the gap between the conical head and the body are crushed and broken.

Q: What are the two types of cone crushers?

A: Single Cylinder Hydraulic Cone Crusher:Has a single hydraulic cylinder that supports the main shaft. Provides simple and reliable hydraulic adjustment and overload protection. Multi-cylinder Hydraulic Cone Crusher:Features multiple hydraulic cylinders for better stability and crushing performance.

Q: How does a gyrating cone crusher work?

A: The mantle gyrates, or rotates, eccentrically, which causes the material to be crushed between the mantle and the concave. As the material is crushed, it is forced to move closer to the bottom of the chamber due to the gyrating motion.

Q: What is the principle of cone crusher?

A: A cone crusher has two sides: An open side and a closed side. As the material crushes, the particles that are small enough to fit through the open side fall through the space between the mantle and the concave. As the mantle gyrates, it creates a narrow point and a wide point.

Q: What is the difference between HP and GP cone crusher?

A: With HP cones, unscrewing the bowl from the mainframe is faster. It is partly for this reason that the thickness of the wear parts for GP cones has been maximized because the lower g/ton liner wear compensates for the longer liner change-out time.

Q: What is the difference between a cone crusher and a hammer mill?

A: Cone Crushers: Perfect for secondary and tertiary crushing with precise output. Impact Crushers: Suitable for various stages with impactful reduction. Hammer Mills: Versatile and efficient for a wide range of materials.

Q: Which type of crusher is best?

A: The best type of crusher for hard rock is a jaw crusher. Jaw crushers can handle very large pieces of rock, and are able to produce a finely crushed product with a relatively small motor. They are popular in mining and quarrying applications, as well as in construction sites.

Q: What is the difference between short head and standard cone crusher?

A: Cone crushers come in two main types: Standard and shorthead. The standard cone crusher has a large head angle, coarser discharge, and higher capacity, while the shorthead cone crusher has a steeper head angle, finer discharge and higher fines production.
